How to Moisturize in Winter

Winter is one of the hardest seasons on your skin. With the low humidity and cold temperatures, the moisture gets sucked right out of your skin.  And we still have another 38 days left to go! Here are a few tips that can help hydrate your skin and have it feeling smooth and soft.

  • Wash your face with a cleanser that is made specifically for faces. These are made to be gentler and some contain moisturizers in them.  Try Anew Cleanse 2 in 1 Anti-Aging Gel Cleanser or mark Calming Effect Comforting Milk Cleanser.
  • Avoid long hot showers, baths and hot tubs. Keep your shower water lukewarm and don’t spend as much time in the bath and hot tub as you would normally.  Hot water can rob your skin of its moisture.
  • After having a shower, pat yourself dry and apply a moisturizer right away. This includes your face and neck, legs, elbows, hands and feet.  Applying the lotion right away will help to lock in the moisture.  Try Skin So Soft Ultra Body Serum with Silkening Pearls.
  • During your shower avoid using too much soap. Try using Skin So Soft Moisturizing Shower Gel or Planet Spa Hydrating Body Wash with olive oil. These will help to add moisture to your skin as you bathe.
  • Keep your lips hydrated as well. Don’t lick them as this will actually dry your lips out faster. Instead use a lip balm to help keep them hydrated. Try Naturals Lip Balm or Moisture Therapy Intensive Moisturizing Lip Treatment with SPF 15. Lips balms are small and inexpensive so keep one in your coat pocket or glove compartment as well as in your make up bag.
  • Other tips to keeping your skin hydrated are to keep a humidifier running in your home. You can also achieve the same effect by boiling water on your stove. Please don’t leave it unattended though. Also make sure to put hats, scarves and gloves on before you leave the house so the cold winter air doesn’t get a chance to touch your skin. Drinking plenty of fluids will also help to keep your body and skin hydrated.

Here are some moisturizing terms that you should be aware of when choosing the right products.

  • Lotion:  A light moisturizer that is best on skin that is not too dry. It is quickly absorbed into the skin.
  • Cream: Creams are thicker, but are still easily absorbed into the skin. They create a barrier between your skin and the elements. Creams are better for the drier parts of your body like elbows and feet.

  • Butter: This is an oil based moisturizer that is best used on very dry skin areas.  It is very thick and can sometimes feel greasy.
